By Jeanne DuPrau
Imagine if your world had the possibility to be shrouded in darkness forever. Imagine if humanity’s only hope was in the presence of electricity. Imagine if the power started going out more often, leaving your entire city in darkness for longer each time, as if the seconds were slowly ticking by until the lights went out one final time.
The City of Ember has everything it needs – food, water, electricity. But, the way things are looking, it might not be long before the promise of abundance gets turned on its head. The storerooms are emptying, corruption are rising, and the lights might go out at any second.
Among all this chaos, Lina and Doon search for a way out of the city. Does it even exist? And if it does, will they be brave enough to take it? Will anyone listen to them?
Why should you read this book?
If you like adventure and sci-fi and dystopia all mixed together (and you’re not scared of a few frightening parts) then this is the book for you. It’s great story about kids who are trying to solve a mystery where time is running out on them. You will not expect the end, or the big reveal.
Who should read this book?
Ignoring the fact that I bought my elementary school age sister a copy for Christmas, I would say that 5th grade and above is a good age. It can be a little scary at times, but it’s more suspenseful most of the time. If that bothers you, maybe don’t read it. Otherwise, you’ll be fine.
